Pickets vs. Boards

Picket Board Shiplap V-Groove Board

Pickets are flat on one side and curved on the face.  Planed smooth, they typically measure 2-3/4" in width and come either pointed  or square ended.  Square ended pickets can then additionally be capped to create a finished trim look. Picture PS1

Boards are flat on both sides and planed smooth.  Standard boards are nominally 1x4 and are sometimes available in 1x5 and 1x6.  Smaller board widths are also available.  Boards can be left square ended Picture SB3 or have a top cut into them.  Please see Board Tops below.

Shiplap v-groove boards interlock with each other and create a "v" style groove in between each board when they are assembled together.  This style of fence generally does not develop the small gaps in between the boards that a regular "butted" style fence can due to seasonal expansion and contraction.  Shiplap fences Picture BF1 have a very solid nature and look great, but have an additional cost of about 40% over standard butted board fences. Backing Rails

Rustic Rail Colonial Rail Molded Dowel Rail

2x4 Rail 5/4" x 4" Rail 3x3 Gate Frame Stock

Rustic Rails are the most common rails for stockade fence.  They are slightly rough on the curved side, and will often have a taper to them i.e. the thickness can vary throughout the rail, as well as vary slightly from rail to rail. Picture PS9

Colonial Rails are the most common rails for board style fence although they are quite often used on stockade fence.  These rails generally measure 1-3/4" x 3" and have a rough cut top and bottom with planned sides. Picture BF6

Molded Dowel Rails will be found on all types of fences.  These are great for spaced fences because they are smooth on all sides and have a nice curve to them.  These rails generally measure 1-3/4" x 2-3/4".  Picture BF5

2 x 4 Rails are used on board fences that require a more finished look.  These rails are smooth on all 4 sides and measure 1-1/2" x 3-1/2". Picture BF11

5/4" x 4" Rails are used on our universal style panels.  These panels are framed on both sides using this rail and are the most aesthetically pleasing cedar panels as there is no "bad" or "rail" side.  These rails are also used on our chestnut hill panels, using similar construction.  Picture BF4

3 x 3 Rails are used in our gate frame construction for stockade and board style gates.  These rails generally measure 2-3/4" x 2-3/4".  Picture CG10

Cap Strips

1x2 Cap Strip 2x3 Cap Strip

Cap Strips are used on top of square ended picket or flat topped board fences.  They provide a great finishing touch that is inexpensive and easy to install.  The 1x2 is flexible and may be used on scalloped fence panels.  These strips are for solid or spaced fences.
